Many believe that babies are born without any sense of morality and must learn it as they get older. However, the Quran proves that babies already show signs of a sense of right and wrong. The Quran mentions that when people accused and questioned Maryam (AS) regarding her premarital childbirth, she pointed to her child, Isa (AS). They said, “How can we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?” Then Allah revealed the truth about her virgin birth. The child, Isa, said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive. [He has made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I will die, and the day I am raised alive.” [19:29–30] This verse shows the child’s truthfulness and a clear understanding of responsibility. Also, it proves that speech and language development in infants can occur in some cases similarly to that of regular humans.
